MEDRIX has officially wrapped up Week 1 of our GlobalGiving campaign to fund five life-changing heart surgeries in Central Vietnam! We are so thankful to the generous donations we have received so far, and are excited to see the impact that these funds will make in the lives of children and their families in Southeast Asia.
Children's heart disease is the most common birth defect globally. 90% of children born in developing countries do not have access to the care they require, either because of geography or lack of financial stability. MEDRIX bridges both of these challenges for children in need of life-changing and life-saving heart surgeries. MEDRIX supports the entire family by sponsoring the surgery itself as well as supplementing everyday expenses on an "as-needed" basis--providing transportation, housing and food when the family cannot afford to do so while staying in urban Hue. This is important and often a huge obstacle for rural families living in poverty: even if they can save and/or borrow the money needed for the surgery itself, Hue is often a long journey from their village, so hotel accomodations are required. It has not been unknown to encounter families that, prior to sponsorship, plan on staying on the streets of Hue because they cannot afford a hotel room. Additionally, unlike Western hospitals, hospitals in Vietnam do not provide food for the patients; this responsibility falls back on the family. MEDRIX is proud to say that even when funds are tight, we have never had to turn away a family that has been approved for heart surgery sponsorship. We have always found a way to help our friends and neighbors in Vietnam when it has been needed!
