Ingrid and Clelia head up our Extensionist crew, making household visits to share knowledge and coach women about Healthy Kitchens and Cooking for Nutrition. This often means they must go to remote locations down long dirt roads surround by high canopy trees with coffee bushes below. And sometimes they find more that needs doing than just our "regular" work.
About 200 families live in the village of Piedrecitas -- Little Stones, in Spanish. Many of the women here are working with the Seeds Team to improve their family's nutrition via a Family Nutrition Garden or Backyard Farm.
During a recent visit to Piedrecitas, Ingrid stopped in to see Doña Zoyla Reyes, and discovered that at the age of 90, she was now living alone, without any family help. Worse yet, Doña Zoyla was unable to prepare adequate food for herself and had become too weak to stand or walk on her own. With great pleasure, Ingrid and the team brought Doña Zoyla a walker to use, and to help rebuild her strength, we will bring a supply of concentrated nutrition drink to Doña Zoyla each time we visit Piedrecitas over the next few weeks.
Although our focus is on long-term sustainable solutions, we can't ignore emergencies when they arise. This is the third time we have loaned the walker to a family in the Chocolá region, and it's not the first time we have felt we had to spend extra money to provide emergency nutrition supplement. But it is the first time these supplements have benefitted someone who is 90 years old!
One great result of developing a team that is completely local to the area of work is their commitment to helping the people of their communities. The compassion and sharing exhibited by our team makes us very proud, and we hope you are proud, too.
YOUR SUPPORT IS WHAT ALLOWS US TO CONTINUE OUR EDUCATION AND COACHING, and to help a person like Doña Zoyla have a better life!!
THANKS FOR YOUR CONTINUING SUPPORT!
