Healthy Kitchens and Cooking for Nutrition

As a result of our Backyard Farm program (Casa Granja in Spanish), more and more husbands are taking action -- supporting their wives in the garden and working to maintain and improve the production of small animals for protein.

And it’s not just taking care of animals and plants on sunny days, but men in rural families are also giving a helping hand in the kitchen. It is source of great pride and happiness to collect what is produced in the Casa Granja and help prepare it as meals for the family -- meals the men say taste better than ever before!

An important part of the Casa-Granja program is involving all family members in improving the household environment and family health by keeping living areas clean and orderly. During home visits with each family, our Extensionists give special emphasis to encouraging the men and boys to participate in cooking and home hygiene activities. As they learn how nutrition and hygiene work together to to prevent illness, they understand how important it is for them to help keep cooking and eating areas in the house free from pathogens.

Whether at a hearth or in a kitchen, food preparation has long been a central feature of home activity. With father, mother and children participating in creating their own "farm-to-table" meals, a whole new picture of traditional rural families emerges, all as a result of the Seeds for a Future program you support!

Dear Supporter,

The López family from Camaché Chiquito in Santo Tomás, Suchitepéquez has been part of our Casa-Granja food security program since late 2018. This is their story in their own words:

 “Our family is the most important thing for us. But we also consider our neighbors part of our community and we always want to give them the best. By participating in the Seeds for the Future project I have learned many things, from cultivating herbs and vegetables in my garden, having animals in my corral, making compost from kitchen scraps, growing fish in my pond & mushrooms under the table! We also learned about preparing new meals with nutritious ingredients. Before that, I didn't know that I could combine the food that I now have in my garden.

Seeds for a Future gives us nutritional practices where I have learned to make green tortillas, broths of chicken livers with greens, meals with mushrooms, fresh juices from chaya and moringa with cucumber and fruits that are in the courtyards of my house.

As a woman committed to my family, it is necessary to prepare the best, and it is good that they teach us and tell us to stop consuming sodas & junk foods.

And they not only teach me, but also my daughter and my mother. The whole family benefits from the help that is given to us and the recipe book given to us helps us to continue practicing a healthy diet.
