Guatemala is known as the land of Eternal Spring!
And for participating families in the Chocolá area, Spring means lush gardens, eggs and chicks galore and tilapia ponds and rabbit pens teeming with life. Thanks to coaching and training from Seeds for a Future, families produce a wealth of nutritious greens, eggs and animal protein in their backyard farms, and can cook nutrition-packed daily meals for the whole family! Traditional meals like "Caldo" (soup), Eggs with Greens, and Tamales are easy to make and even tastier and more healthful when boosted with nutritious greens and protein.
As part of expanding our services to help more families, 4 members of the Seeds Field Team spent a week in Chajul, in an area known as the "Ixil Triangle." Sponsored by local Ixil groups AMACHAJUL and ACEFOMI, the Team provided 5 days of hands-on and "site-specific" learning on nutrition gardens and how better nutrition will benefit all family members. 25 participants, mostly women, enjoyed practical experience in soil preparation, planting seeds or seedlings and of course cooking healthy meals with what their new gardens will soon produce!
Whatever the season, the Seeds for a Future Team works hard to help rural families learn ways to produce nutritious food, right in their home yard or patio. The success of our program is built on flexibility, attention to local factors, use of re-purposed or low-cost materials, and starter plants and animals shared by families with well-established backyard farms -- always accompanied by on-going coaching and advice.
YOUR SUPPORT CONTINUES TO BE A FUNDAMENTAL COMPONENT of our ability to provide these services and help families build better lives for themselves!
CELEBRATE THIS SEASON OF RENEWAL BY RENEWING YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT! Please consider making a gift on a recurring monthly basis!
THANK YOU! and Happy Spring!
