Field Days, Cooking Sessions and Looking Forward

By Suzanne de Berge | President

Moms & babies -- all are benefitting!!
Moms & babies -- all are benefitting!!

Two of the greatest problems in rural Guatemala are malnutrition and the challenge of keeping a healthy household in the face of limited and poor quality water.  Seeds for a Future’s CLEAN KITCHENS and COOKING FOR NUTRITION programs target these serious problems, using several methods to help women learn about better hygiene and family nutrition.

Small group meetings and regular in-home visits are fundamental, and now we’re adding FIELD DAYS where women visit a Seeds demonstration garden, or gardens of nearby families, and share ideas and experiences.

Perhaps the most fun events are the GROUP COOKING SESSIONS where we feature new and easy ways to improve family nutrition -- by adding high-nutrition greens from the home garden to well-known local recipes, or with new recipes that substitute (and improve on) store-bought products, like making a refreshing drink from high-nutrition chaya leaves.

And since raising rabbits is a new experience for many of the families, we also offer training demonstrations on how to properly kill, clean and prepare tasty, highly nutritious rabbit meat.

All of these activities reinforce important information about kitchen and family hygiene, and why nutrition is important in growth and brain development, but most of all, they are fun and offer women a chance to work together, to share laughter and ideas – and to feel valued and respected.

I hope you can imagine how rewarding and motivating it is for Seeds staff to hear the women participants say, “Thank you so much for taking us into account.  No one has ever told us these things before or helped us learn how to take better care of our babies and our families.  Thank you for thinking of us.”
