CORRECT Health in Haiti is working to increase the number of pregnant women who attend the minimum four prenatal care visits recommended by the WHO. This will be done through community awareness raising, individual prenatal visits, as well as innovative group prenatal care visits. CORRECT will also properly train traditional birth attendants, known as matwon, on safe delivery, immediate newborn care and health clinic referral signs, and provide them with clean delivery kits for safe births.
Maternal mortality in Haiti has declined steadily but slowly, yet Haiti's maternal mortality rate remains the highest of any country in the Western hemisphere, at an estimated 359 deaths for every 100,000 live births. Approximately one of every 80 women in Haiti will die from childbirth and pregnancy related causes. Crushing poverty, poor health infrastructure and frequent natural disasters are some of the causes of the poor situation for maternal health in Haiti.
High quality prenatal or antenatal care (ANC) is an essential component of the reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health continuum of care. Only 54% of pregnant women in Haiti attend the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommended minimum of 4 focused prenatal visits. In 2018, the rural area of Chateau was home to nearly 400 expectant mothers. The reality of insufficient education and poor health seeking behavior in rural Haiti means that only 65 pregnant women visited the clinic.
