Summary

Women living in rural areas of Albania most often do not have nearby access to health clinics. Without screening and preventative care, they often do not know of serious illnesses until they have progressed to dangerous stages. Diakonia Agapes will screen for cervical cancers and sexually transmitted diseases for 800 women living in rural areas of Albania. It will enable early treatment as well as encourage women in the community to value regular screening.

Challenge

Women in rural areas often go undiagnosed with cancer and some sexually-transmitted diseases, due to a lack of screening and early detection. Women in Kucova do not have easy access to health care centers and many are reluctant to seek health care for women's health concerns. The women in this area also do not have a strong tradition of seeking screening, and often ignore health symptoms until it's too late. Women often do not receive a diagnosis until the illnesses are dangerously advanced

Solution

Diakonia Agapes will conduct awareness campaign and workshops in 4 villages of the Kucova Municipality. These will change the mentality of women in the area to value screenings and early detection, and encourage them to seek screenings for cervical cancer as well as sexually-transmitted diseases. The project will provide screenings with a qualified doctor. It will also establish health groups of women to continue to spread awareness in the community.

Long-Term Impact

Diakonia Agapes will change the mentality of 800 women in 4 villages of Kucova Municipality by creating awareness that regular screenings for cervical cancer and sexually-transmitted diseases are vital to women's health. The awareness will encourage them to seek out medical screenings regularly. In addition, it will build awareness among public health officials as to the need to continue outreach in the communities and encourage women to be screened before the illnesses can advance.
