Women's Skills Training- Phase ll

By Mitch Lewis | Executive Director

As ATEG goes into Phase ll of our Women’s Skills Training program, we are excited that 60 new women have signed up for training. These are women from both the Faladie and the Zantiquilla IDP Camps. This phase follows the resounding success of the first phase in which 15 women from Faladie were taught to sew. These women are now producing beautiful products that are being sold locally as well as being exported to the U.S. The original 15 women formed a cooperative which continues to expand as they train additional women.

Phase ll introduces a new group of skills and a new group of women. Women from both camps will be trained in Henna tattooing which is an important part of their culture. Another group of women will learn Saponification (soap making). Women from Faladie will be trained in Milk Processing. A group of women at Zantiquilla will receive Agriculture training. Since the camp is located near a busy crossroad with a marketplace, this presents a great opportunity for selling their produce. Faladie women could not be offered this program since Faladie is built on a garbage dump and agriculture would not be possible on the contaminated soil.

Training is scheduled to begin in mid-March. Phase ll was made possible through a generous grant from the P&G Alumni Fund of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation.
