Workshop Making Shoes for God's Children

By Mitch Lewis | Executive Director

As important as our work in Africa is, none of it would be possible without the support we get from caring folks here in the U.S. Support comes, not only from generous donations, but also from volunteers who commit their time and energy to making shoes for African orphans who have no one that we can train to make shoes for them. We recently held a “Heeling Our World” workshop in New Bern, NC. The event was sponsored by Faith Connection, a local foundation that is comprised of 20 member churches. The workshop was attended by 250 volunteers who learned about the plight of the barefoot children, and then took an advocacy action by making shoes for them. Some folks drew patterns. Others cut out the fabric and the soles. Others hand sewed, machine sewed while others glued. Thanks to their efforts we have 350 shoes at various stages of completion. Many are ready to ship to African orphanages and the balance should be finished at our next workshop later this Summer. It was so inspiring to see young and old, black and white, Montagnard's from Viet Nam, a group from the Congo, all faiths, working together, side by side to help God’s children on the other side of the world. Everyone enjoyed being a part of this incredible mix of people. Many thanks to all the caring folks who worked so hard to make this event a huge success.
