Preventing Illness

By Mitch Lewis | Executive Director

As I previously reported, during the month of April we did a major outreach program directed at the street children of Bamako, Mali. Approximately 3,000 children visited the clinic to be examined and treated for a variety of illnesses. In analyzing the data, our medical staff observed that many of the illnesses could have been prevented if the children had access to clean water.

Unfortunately, the primary source of water for drinking and bathing is the river. Using this contaminated water can cause severe illness. We therefore concluded that, in addition to treating these illnesses our mission needed to expand to include preventative measures. We are getting estimates for adding an outdoor area for the children to take showers and fill their water bottles. We also expect to hold classes to teach the children about proper hygiene.

Medical Transport At the present time, our staff is transporting children to the clinic in their personal vehicles. We are hoping to raise the funds needed to purchase a used van that we can use for medical transport.
