International Day of Older Persons Celebration

The United Nations' (UN) International Day of Older Persons is celebrated annually on October 1 to recognize the contributions of older persons and to examine issues that affect their lives.

The Heliopolis Elderly Center and Projeto Velho Amigo organized a huge party for over 350 Senior Citizens! The celebration was also attended by 90 caregivers and 60 volunteers! It was a huge success!

The celebration started early on Monday, October 1st, 2018 at Espaco Villa Lobos by 9 am we already had many people mingling on the dance floor! The party ended at 5 pm and we had loads of fun activities planned.

Seniors were able to make; sock puppets, paint, play checkers, chess and dominoes and dance! A delicious and healthy lunch was served at 12:00 and volunteers took yummy plates of food to each Senior present.

Fernando Rios sang samba and played many classic Brazilian tunes throughout the day! Everyone loved the music and danced - wheelchairs and all!!!!

Later on in the day, Heliopolis Elderly Center seniors presented a dance that they had prepared for the special day! It was so much fun and all the ladies wore flower crowns!!! We are already looking forward to next years party and other activities.

Thanks to the celebration we were able to cooperate with different outreach programs to promote older persons, and inter-generational cooperation on voluntary activities focused on health and education. The party was a success and it actively promoted public awareness and attention on the International Day of Older Persons.
