Day of Positive Action

The Velho Amigo Institute participated last month in the 2022 Day of Positive Activities for Older Adults. This volunteer movement calls on each of us to participate in the transformation of society.

The event took place at Villa Lobos Park to awaken and mobilize people for social causes and disseminate ways to engage and actively participate in our society!

The Heliopolis Center participated in this event with 30 older adults and eight volunteers. The older adults held a mandala construction workshop at the park that day. In addition, they participated in the day's cultural attractions (at the park), live concerts, performances, and a circle dance workshop.

Our volunteers distributed the Brazilian Statute of the Elderly, a booklet that defines Brazilian laws to protect the elderly, who must not suffer discrimination of any kind and must be supported by their children in their old age.

The 2022 Day of Positive Activities for Older Adults held an important theme linking to the International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP), which serves as a hallmark and reminder of the significant role that older adults play in traversing global challenges and contributing to their solutions with resilience and fortitude.

Recognizing the vital contributions of older persons and promoting the inclusion of their voices, perspectives, and needs is critical to creating meaningful policies to enhance a holistic response to local, national, and global challenges that Senior Citizens face daily. Therefore, the 2022 Day of Positive Activities for Older Adults,  is a call to action and an opportunity to embrace older persons' voices and showcase their resilience and contributions to society. At the same time, promoting policy dialogues to enhance the protection of older persons human rights and recognize their contributions to the community at large.
