Summary

EcoViva supports community-led social justice movements in Central America that are implementing innovative solutions to poverty, environmental degradation, and climate change. After a devasting regional drought across Central America, communities in El Salvador and Honduras need your support to develop the programs and practices that will help fishers, farmers, sea turtle egg collectors, and rural community leaders develop resilient strategies to provide for their families.

Challenge

Central America is suffering from prolonged droughts, water shortages, and environmental degradation, with consequences resulting in loss of income, food insecurity, and for many - forced migration. Our partners need to continue developing strategies that promote environmental resilience and conservation, but resources are limited. Due to recent foreign aid cuts, an unstable Honduran government, and an uncertain administration in El Salvador, the fate of these programs are at risk.

Solution

Our partners are implementing innovative grassroots solutions to the effects of climate change. The Mangrove Association prepares communities for natural disasters, trains farmers in diversified agriculture, and preserves mangrove forests, which protect coastal communities. AMBAS protects sea turtle species and empowers women. Red COMAL is building an equitable rural economy through training, agroecology, and entrepreneurship.

Long-Term Impact

This project invests in building long-term solutions and strategies to unpredictable weather and natural disasters caused by climate change. The project will restore and protect hundreds of acres of mangrove forests, conserve millions of sea turtles for future generations, provide opportunities to incorporate new drought-resilient crops, and support fishers with training and materials to fish sustainably.
