Sickle cell does not belong in the closet!

One of the greatest Ugandans who ever lived was Philly Bongoley Lutaya who in his own words gave Aids “a face". Taking on his philosophy is Lucy - Not real names a sickle cell patient.

Lucy soon realized that people would rather sweep sickle cell under the carpet and forget about it... she knew only too well the stigma and discrimination faced by people with sickle cell in Uganda.

Yet once armed with scientific facts as to the cause of sickle cell disease, Lucy committed herself, a number of other patients together with several health workers in order to change this state of affairs.

We are grateful to our supporter who joined hands to make a difference in these children's lives for the majority of the sufferers are young.

Currently, SCOEN through this project champions the fight against sickle cell disease making sure that it is no longer a neglected condition.

FIGHTING STIGMA; under this initiative we move to communities and educate the people about sickle cell disease, its health effects , management and care. We go an extra mile and give medication handouts to people living with sickle cell . In schools and tertiary institutions we are establishing Sickle Cell Clubs as a means of fighting stigma and offer psycho-social support.

Our focus in the coming quarters:

PSYCHO-SOCIAL SUPPORT THROUGH COMMUNITY SICKLE CELL SUPPORT NETWORKS; following the sickle cell screening and testing, we shall cluster the affected families into focus groups with an aim of offering psychosocial support using our accredited team of Sickle Cell Counselors.
FAMILY ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT FOR POVERTY ALLEVIATION; Sickle Cell management and care has a big financial burden to the affected families. This burden is as a result of the frequent hospitalizations of the persons living with sickle cell, to the Care-takers /family members there is a loss of productive time due to work absenteeism which leads to loss of employment in most cases. Our economic empowerment program will enables us to promote poverty alleviation through agribusiness and art and crafts. This program is in its initial stages.
