Summary

The Advocacy Project is seeking funds for our fellowship program, which has deployed 340 students to serve with advocates in the Global South since 2003. We offer exciting field fellowships to graduates like Dawa from Texas A and M (top photo) who worked with girls in Zimbabwe in 2022. We also invite creative undergraduates and high school students to join our team remotely. Faced by global threats like climate change our students are hungry to engage. Please help us to make it happen!

Challenge

Our mission is to empower marginalized communities. Our 2023 partners have included survivors of war rape in Uganda; girls at risk from marriage in Zimbabwe; River Gypsies in Bangladesh; families of the disappeared in Nepal; and women in the settlements of Nairobi who struggle with pollution, poverty, under-nutrition and a lack of basic services. At the same time, our partners are also incredibly resilient, creative and talented. Our challenge is to help them find sustainable solutions.

Solution

We have transferred over $205,000 to 68 projects in the South since 2020 and Peace Fellows are one reason for this success. This year our student Fellows have battled malaria in India, supported composting in the settlements of Nairobi, and produced soap in US schools to support education in Zimbabwe. This model of fellowship produces North-South friendships and inspires innovative local solutions to big challenges like climate change and child marriage. Please help us to keep it going in 2024!

Long-Term Impact

2022 and 2023 have shown how 10 weeks of support from a talented student can help trigger change in the South. Dawa (top photo) was the latest Peace Fellow from the US to help girls in inner-city Zimbabwe build a soap business in 2022. This year the girls will sell an amazing 60,000 bottles, enabling them to complete school and avoid early marriage. This long-term perspective is built into all projects and our organizational DNA. It also makes our fellowships deeply satisfying and educational.
