Summary

Ecological center Los Cuartos plans to train and provide necessary equipment for 50 vulnerable families in the rural communities of Aguascalientes, Mexico, to build their own family gardens and insect farms. This practice would help them produce their own healthy food and a source of an additional income amidst the ongoing pandemic, loss of jobs and the cancellation of the San Marcos fair - the biggest of the America and the second most important annual income in the state.

Challenge

The covid-19 pandemic and the cancellation of the biggest of the America San Marcos fair (the second most important annual income source) in Aguascalientes, Mexico, left many people unemployed and unable to feed their families. 6 out of 11 municipalities of the state of Aguascalientes have half or more inhabitants living in poverty. The project will affect 50 vulnerable families in rural communities in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and will invite their children to participate in educational camps.

Solution

Ecological center Los Cuartos will train and provide necessary equipment for the installation of gardens and insect farms for 50 vulnerable families. Family gardens and insect farms can be installed in small spaces, houses and can provide up to 40% of dietary needs of a family. The produce can also be sold providing an additional income source for families. Los Cuartos will support families through follow - up visits and will help to facilitate the commercialization of the produce.

Long-Term Impact

50 family gardens and insect farms will provide a continual healthy food and an additional income source for vulnerable communities, improve their well-being and make them more economically independent. The project would empower women with a possibility to support their families and children through the educational and leadership camps. The project would also help improve air quality, solve organic waste problem by producing compost, strengthen communities and reduce their carbon footprint.
