Challenge

Millions of poor rural women in Ethiopia make their living through the collection, distribution, and trade of firewood for fuels. The extensive demand for fuelwood is causing widespread degradation in the existing natural forest. Collecting firewood exposes women to sexual assaults and rape. As an alternative, solar can offer women a pathway out of energy poverty and potential to a thriving business. But For women to own solar businesses, access to finance is an ongoing restraint.

Solution

STEM Synergy will provide the inputs, equipment, and training needed for women to start the solar bakery business. The women will also be trained in business management and sales skills. The purpose of this Solar Bakery project is to help underprivileged rural communities in Ethiopia, to install solar bakeries. The project seeks to address various problems, such as gender inequality, unemployment, extreme poverty, and degradation of natural resources.

Long-Term Impact

The project will train and provide 250 women allowing them to create their own small businesses in solar bakery thereby generate income and employment. Creation of a self-sustaining micro-enterprise to turn out freshly baked bread while creating jobs and eliminating the cost of fuel. This program helps to alleviate poverty and enhance the quality of life by empowering women to raise their standard of living through self-sustaining micro-enterprise.
