How we're responding during the lockdown in India

By Erika Narkiewicz | Digital Fundraiser

Thank you for your continued support of our work to reach the most marginalised communities in India and Nepal, especially in these challenging times. I'm writing to update you on the situation in the shelter for homeless young women, following the extension of the lockdown in India. We are in regular contact with our partners on the ground and would like to share this update with you:

"The pandemic presents a serious situation for unprotected and high-risk groups- such as homeless young women in Mumbai. Although these women remain in the safe space of the shelter, they are still susceptible to illness due to low immunity, at times struggle with mental health issues and potential loss of jobs due to social distancing. The shelter has limited space where now almost 20 young women along with their children are staying in close proximity. Mindful of the increased risk factor we continue to run the shelter with the unwavering support and work of the field workers, taking precautions, developing and adhering to safety protocols."

Our partners have hired 2 workers to look after the girls in the shelter and video calls for group sessions, counselling, and other activities are taking place. We support them in their endeavours to assist the girls in the group homes, as well as some of the alumnis who lost their jobs, financially so they can pay their rent and with the provision of food.

We will continue to keep you updated as the situation and needs change. In the meantime, if you would like to support our coronavirus relief fund, please visit www.globalgiving.org/projects/karuna-coronavirus-appeal/.

Wishing you and those close to you well.

With warmth and gratitude,

Erika Narkiewicz
