Disha's story

By Sophie Stephens | Digital Fundraiser

Disha, 27 years old, has endured a life marred by domestic abuse at the hands of her alcoholic husband. The abuse extended beyond Disha to their children, isolating her from her family and support system. The cycle of violence led to multiple forced pregnancies and abortions, leaving Disha physically and emotionally drained.

In a brave move to safeguard her children and herself, Disha sought refuge at Urja’s shelter. Here, she and her two daughters, aged 5 and 7, found a haven from the violence. The journey to recovery was gradual, but through consistent, trauma-informed counselling, Disha began to reclaim her strength, hope, and confidence.

At Urja’s Development Shelter, Disha and her children have actively engaged in support programs aimed at their holistic development. The Urja team has been instrumental in helping Disha retrieve essential civil and legal documents previously withheld by her in-laws. The recent suicide of Disha’s husband has been a significant setback, yet with the shelter’s ongoing support, Disha and her children are learning to navigate this unforeseen tragedy.

Disha has taken steps towards independence by working at a Tele-calling centre, providing for her family and investing in her children’s education. Her children have started their educational journey at a playschool near the shelter, marking the first steps towards a brighter future. Despite the years of oppression, Disha now looks forward to a life of possibilities and growth.
