Shweta* is a 35-year-old individual with a woman-led identity from Dombivli. She first came in contact with our project in June 2021 after repeated instances of family abuse and discrimination and multiple attempts to escape their abusive household before. After arriving, our partners resolved her search for shelter. Initially, as a remote participant, now Shweta is part of the shelter. She has faced a long battle against physical, emotional and financial violence and abuse. Having been assaulted as a child and faced sexual violence growing up, and furthermore facing gender dysphoria and harassment over sexuality, she has struggled to be accepted and, most importantly, claim her identity. Years of emotional and physical abuse have manifested as mental health issues, for which she is currently receiving counselling and psychiatric care. Due to a recent outburst at home, she was forced to leave and seek immediate assistance at OSC Jogeshwari where she received prompt support in paralegal guidance, health and retrieving possessions from the place of residence.
It has taken Shweta a long battle of fighting legally against their family to live a life of dignity. They are looking for permanent means of livelihood and are always around to help others within the shelter for work-related support. They have grown from strength to strength in terms of moving ahead professionally, even if it would be freelance work. They are a professional Transcriber, Translator, Editor, Proofreader, Subtitler, and Captioner. Their determination and grit to carry them out of the abusive familial environment has helped them trudge forward resiliently. Shweta is currently concentrating on her therapy and making the best of the resources available to strive toward the future they envision for themselves. They have been engaged in art-based therapy, skill development and career guidance in the shelter.
Your support is instrumental in helping Shweta find her new life and live with dignity. Thank you!
