For generations of women in India, violence at the hands of those who are supposed to protect and love them is the norm.
Gayatri was abused and effectively imprisoned by her husband. With no other means to support her three children, she felt she had no choice but to stay. After a final brutal attack, Gayatri decided to runaway - fortunately finding support and safety at Urja, a Karuna-supported shelter in Mumbai.
"When I came to the shelter I felt I should have come here much sooner.
Here, I feel I am truly living a beautiful life.' - Gayatri
Now, for herself and her children, the generational cycle of abuse can finally end.
In this video, Gayatri tells her incredible story of survival in her own words. *** The Shadow Pandemic means millions of women are at increased risk of abuse, just like Gayatri. We are working to end this and your support in this work is invaluable. Thank you.
