The journey to freedom...

By Sophie Stephens | Digital Fundraiser

Sana spent her whole childhood taking care of her disabled brother and mother. She was repeatedly subjected to emotional abuse by another, older, brother and the burden of household chores and all financial responsibility fell entirely to her.

Sana's stress and abuse only grew and she needed a way out.

She finally found the courage to leave her abusive family and seek support and safe space at URJA, a female hostel which we support. When she first arrived, she took part in therapy to develop her self-belief.

Sana began to focus on herself for the first time in her life.

Her family made many attempts to bully her back into overworking for them, but thanks to new self-confidence, she remained strong and prioritised her own needs. This journey of selfcare also involved enrolling in education, embroidery and beautician courses, which enabled her to get a job.

With a new job and starting education, Sana was hopeful; however, her brother filed a court case against her, attempting to take property she owned away from her. Urja’s legal team have been able to support her; now, she knows her rights and has quality representation.

Though the case is ongoing, overall, Sana feels like the support she has received has been life-changing. Soon, she will complete her exams, and, after saving up money from her employment, now lives independently.

Sana is finally free.

Thank you.
