Summary
Poverty is a key driver of environmental degradation in Uganda, as communities rely on charcoal burning, firewood, timber sales, and unsustainable farming for income. This project supports 800 farmers in Eastern Uganda to plant 50,000 fruit trees (including avocado, jackfruit, papaw, improved mangoes, oranges, and lemons) to conserve the environment, mitigate climate change, and improve household income and nutrition.
During the quarter, the project:
Challenges: Limited funding to meet the high demand for seedlings.
Recommendations and Way Forward:
The project has proven viable in improving environmental conservation, income generation, and nutrition. Fruit trees provide ongoing income through biannual harvests while contributing to climate change mitigation. Additional funding and partnerships are needed to expand seedling distribution and support jackfruit processing and marketing
