Summary

This project will facilitate 800 local farmers in Eastern Uganda grow 50,000 fruit trees (avocado, jack fruits, improved mangoes, oranges and lemons as a means of preserving environment, improving household incomes and nutrition, through fruit sales and consumption in 4 years. The project has so far secured 1,000 fruit tree seedlings and distributed to 50 farmers for plantation in three months, raised a nursery bed of 10,000 fruit trees, mobilized and sensitized 134 local farmers in fruit tree growing, and provided support supervision of the farmers that received fruit tree seedlings.

Achievements

  • The project is viable, 735 local farmers has picked interest in fruit tree growing and have registers with our organization in three months.
  • The organization secured 5,000 tree seed lings distributed to 100 farmers for plantation.
  • The organization has raised a nursery beds composed of 1000, improved mangoes, 1000 jack fruits, 1000oranges, 1000 papaws,1000 ovocados that will be distributed in august.
  • mobilized and sensitized 563 local farmers on tree growing and benefit of fruit trees

Challenges:

  • There is limited funding to accelerate the project despite the high demand of the fruit tree seedlings.
  • Due to the high demand, some farmers steel seedlings from each other
  • Fruit tree seedlings are very expensive to buy for the local farmers and we have resorted to produce them by ourselves.

Recommendations:

Fruit trees are more significant in environmental preservation, conservation, compared to other tree grown for timber and firewood yet the maturity period is the same. Fruit trees bear fruits that are harvested and sold and bi-annually for consumption and to raise household incomes while firewood and timber trees are harvested once.   This project is therefore, viable in in improving environment. We therefore request all supporters to donate to this project so as to reduce the escalating environment degradation in eastern Uganda fruit tree growing.
