Summary
Poverty is the major driver of environmental degradation in Uganda. Local communities cut down trees for charcoal, fire wood, and timber for sale to secure household income. In addition engage in utilizing local farming methods to grow food which degrade environment. This project facilitates 800 local farmers in Eastern Uganda to grow 50,000 fruit trees (avocado, jack fruits, papaws, improved mangoes, oranges and lemons as a means of preserving and conserving environment, mitigating the impact of climate change, improving household incomes and nutrition, through fruit sales and consumption. Therefore, this is the June to September 2025 quarterly project report submitted to stakeholders. The project raised a nursery bed of 1500 jack fruit trees seedlings and yet to be distributed to farmers. However, monitored the project and provide advisory services including registering new farmers.
Achievements in the quarter
Challenges:
• There is limited funding to accelerate the project despite the high demand for jack fruit tree seedlings.
Recommendations:
This project is therefore, viable in in improving environment, household incomes and nutrition. We therefore request all supporters to donate to this project so as to mitigate the impact of climate change in Eastern Uganda fruit tree growing. Fruit trees are more significant in mitigating the impact of climate change compared to other tree grown Eastern region of Uganda that are grown for timber and firewood. When cut, they don’t re-germinate. And when planted, the maturity period is the same. Fruit trees bear fruits that are harvested and sold bi-annually for consumption and to raise household incomes while firewood and timber trees are harvested once
We are soliciting for a partner to support jack fruit processing and marketing. The urrent product is worthy for processing and we lack support.
