Ongchen stands by the hostel, a serene smile on his face as the sun sets gently behind the Himalayan mountains. Here, surrounded by the sound of wind and the laughter of fellow hostel students, he feels something he hasn’t known for much of his young life—peace.
At 14 years old, Ongchen has already endured more than most. Growing up in the small village of Badey Busty, his family was trapped in the relentless grip of poverty. Most days his father struggled to earn enough for even a single meal. The weight of this helplessness grew heavier each day until his mother left the family, leaving Ongchen and his siblings to fend for themselves. Her absence left a deep void in Ongchen’s life—he hasn’t seen her in years.
Home was a place of chaos. His father turned to alcohol, a desperate attempt to numb the pain of his circumstances. With resources scarce and school beyond their means, Ongchen’s future seemed bleak.
But everything changed when Ongchen was brought to the hostel, funded by your generosity. Here, he received food, clothing, and shelter and a quality education.
For Ongchen, the hostel is a sanctuary. “Thank you so much for providing us with everything we need in life. It is such a blessing from God to have your support,” he says with gratitude. For the first time, he could envision a future unbound by the limitations of his past.
Education has opened doors for Ongchen, turning his curiosity into a hunger for learning. With every lesson, he’s growing more confident, more hopeful. The impact has reached beyond Ongchen himself; his father has begun to step up as well. Freed from the overwhelming stress of providing alone, he made the decision to stop drinking—a small but meaningful step toward rebuilding their fractured family.
Looking to the future, Ongchen has a dream—a big one. He sees himself becoming a teacher, someone who can guide and inspire others in the same way his teachers have guided him. His eyes light up as he talks about helping children from backgrounds like his realize the power of learning.
Because of donors like you, Ongchen’s life has changed course, and his future is now marked by opportunity instead of despair.
