The Seychelles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to animals (SSPCA) aims to provide care and treatment to the population of stray, neglected, mistreated and abused animals in The Seychelles.
The SSPCA is currently the only organization attempting to deal with the country's stray population of dogs and cats. These animals are a traffic hazards and have a negative impact on the image of the Seychelles as a tourist destination, which accounts for nearly 80% of the country's GDP. Education and preventative measures are needed and can help stop the mistreatment and abuse of animals. The SSPCA is committed to uplifting animal welfare in the Seychelles.
The project aims to sterilise a large population of stray animals and to provide initial primary treatment and long-term care to injured, abandoned, mistreated and neglected domestic animals. We will go into schools with educational programs focused on how to care for animals, and help implement an adoption program for stray and unwanted animals. Through providing initial medical care, we can save mistreated and injured animals with a view to rehoming them.
SSPCA is aiming to build the first animal welfare centre in the Seychelles, with the long-term goal of providing a centre where stray and neglected domestic animals can be treated, cared for and ultimately adopted into new homes. In trying to tackle the country's stray dog problem they have sterilized to date over 10,400 animals. Currently, there is no such facility in the Seychelles and the SSPCA aims to provide the first of its kind in the country.
