Dear Supporters,
This July our volunteers and staff here on Curieuse Island organised and took part in a day of beach cleaning on the beaches of nearby Praslin Island. Our volunteers very much wanted to run an event that would have a positive environmental impact on our local environment while raising money for a worthy cause, the dogs and cats here in the Seychelles.
So we headed over to Praslin in the morning to meet the truck we had hired and made our way to the first beach, Anse Takamaka. Our beach clean was ultimately a competition, with our three teams (the Eagle Rays, the Lemon Sharks and the Wise Old Tortoises) all trying to collect the largest number of full rubbish bags to win the prize at the end of the day. It was also decided that in order to keep things a little more interesting there would be ‘bonus bags’ added to the totals for the team that managed to find the most obscure item on the beaches.
In the end we collected a total of 29 bags of rubbish and recycling and raised a total of £245 for the SSPCA for their next sterilisation event. All of the sterilisation clinics are completely free of charge for all locals in an effort to reduce the number of unwanted animals, which end up as strays.
The SSPCA is currently the only group working to address this issue we are very proud to be able to work with them and support them in their work.
With Gratitude,
GVI Seychelles
