Summary

Our Authors at This Is Africa plan to continuously deliver accurate, independent narratives that challenge historical revisionism, while deconstructing the negative representation of Africa by mainstream media. Our Lean team includes writers from Kenya, Nigeria & Zimbabwe who collaborate remotely to inform, educate, and connect our 1 million subscribers with fresh insights from the continent. This Project will enable us to continue telling inspiring stories and keep our platform running.

Challenge

In the absence of counter-narratives, inaccuracies become a culture. 'Until the story of the hunt is told by the lion, the tale of the hunt will always glorify the hunter,' so until Africans narrate theirs, the African story will always glorify others. Furthermore, incumbent media houses frequently fall victim to political gagging & face the risk of delicensing when they reveal injustices, further limiting outlets of truthtelling. Independent journalism becomes a necessity to educate the masses.

Solution

These funds will ensure uninterrupted content production and delivery, web, email & database management services & overall technical support to optimize our platform for our everyday users. The platform will remain available, accessible, & ad-free but most importantly will continue to run authentic features about Africa & for Africans. This Is Africa, will furnish it's growing subscriber pool with alternative factual pieces in the age of bushfire fake news and misleading opinions.

Long-Term Impact

Thoughts shape societies. We see the urgency to steer the continents' narrative, shaping ideologies & sparking critical thought leadership amongst our readers as we prototype a scalable version of the first ever, self-sustaining multimedia hub for Pan African storytelling in Nairobi. We will provide additional training to our editorial team, core contributors, and start scaling up across the continent. Making our physical presence in Africa a reality is a reach towards more unbiased coverage.
