The June 22nd earthquake that shook the Central Region of Afghanistan exacerbated an existing complex crisis the people of Afghanistan face as a result of decades of conflict, severe drought and an economic downturn.
Prior to the earthquake, Airlink had worked with our NGO partner Save the Children to deliver mixed medical cargo to support healthcare initiatives such as mobile clinics. In total, Airlink helped move nearly 40 tons of medical aid to support health systems strengthening efforts in 9 of Afghanistan’s provinces.
Since the earthquake, Airlink has been working to fulfill the humanitarian needs of the affected communities and continue addressing the overall complex crisis in Afghanistan alongside our NGO partners on the ground.
Airlink has coordinated movement for nearly 15,000 pounds of critically needed supplies to Afghanistan in the past few months. This cargo includes lifesaving medical supplies such as pharmaceuticals, medicines, personal protective equipment, and other items required for providing safe and effective medical care. These shipments come at a critical moment, as an outbreak of cholera has affected many regions of Afghanistan - adding another troubling layer to the complex crisis.
Airlink has been able to move cargo originating in the United States and Europe, through Dubai, directly into Kabul, through free of charge and discounted airfreight generously donated by multiple airline partners. By identifying this cargo movement solution, Airlink has secured almost $80,000 in transportation savings for NGO partners, allowing them to use those funds for direct programmatic purposes.
Airlink is committed to continuing support for relief efforts to address Afghanistan’s complex crisis and will do so for as long as the need exists.
