When Meena's partner got a job offer in Georgia, she was excited to move abroad. They had some hesitation as being LGBTQ in the country was not always safe.
They decided that Meena would travel to Georgia on a visit visa and work remotely and her partner would go on her work visa. This way they would look like roommates and not partners.
Meena told us that she was reserved and quiet compared to her partner who was much more outgoing. Within months of moving her partner became involved with a crowd that frequented the city's party scene. She became sullen and moody at home, criticizing Meena and calling her names.
When Meena expressed her concerns to her partner she slapped Meena and told her to keep quiet or she would "out" her.
This was just after the cancellation of the Gay Pride parade in Tiblisi due to violent anti-gay extremists.
Meena was heartbroken, scared and just wanted to come home. She said she barely recognized her partner anymore. We were able to provide ongoing emotional support and safety planning to Meena until she was able to change her airline ticket and secretly fly back home to the USA. Meena told us she was shaking all the way to the airport and on the plane until she was safely home.
Her partner did not know Meena was leaving and has been begging her to go back to Georgia. Meena is devastated her relationship ended the way it did but wants to move on with her life. Meena is in counseling and is grateful for your support.
It's because of your donations we are able to help LGBTQ victims leave abusive relationships and get home to safety.
