Tania and her wife have been living abroad for two years with their daughter Dove. Tania explained to us that her wife had become more and more abusive as time has gone on. The abuse had progressed from her being moody and yelling to throwing things, becoming physically aggressive and threatening to take Dove away from her.
While Dove is Tania's wife's biological child, they are both on the birth certificate and share parental rights.
Tania didn't know what to do. To the public, everyone thought Tania and her wife were sisters. No one knew they were a couple. Tania feared what might happen if she tried to leave with Dove but stay in the foreign country, where gay rights were not as evolved as in the USA.
Tania also feared what might happen if she fled back to the USA with Dove.
Over a period of several weeks we discussed Tania's potential options and what the outcomes may be from those potential options. Tania had a legal consult in the foreign country as well as a legal consult in the USA.
Tania did make a plan that she felt would keep her and Dove the safest with the least amount of legal hurdles without her compromising herself as a gay woman.
Here is part of an email from Tania. "This was an incredibly challenging decision and if it hadn't had been for you, I may have not explored all the possibilities. I was ready to take Dove and leave without a real plan in mind. Thank you for being my guiding star."
We want to thank you for believing in our mission! This enables victims like Tania to have support no matter where they are in the world!
We wish you and your loved ones peace and joy this holiday season.
Warmly,
The Pathways Team
