Being LGBTQ can be risky in many parts of the world. Being a person of color can also carry danger. For someone like Gabriel — both queer and ethnically diverse — the risks can be compounded.
Gabriel has always been embraced by his friends, family, and colleagues. But during a personal trip abroad in September, he discovered that not everyone shares the same acceptance.
One evening, while walking back to his hostel after dinner, Gabriel was attacked by three men who beat and robbed him. An attempted sexual assault was narrowly prevented by a courageous bystander who intervened, putting their own safety at risk.
Once Gabriel was back safely in his room, he reached out to Pathways. Our advocates immediately provided emotional support, guidance for navigating local legal and medical systems, and financial assistance in replacing his stolen U.S. passport.
Today, Gabriel is safely home, reunited with his therapy dog, Max, and beginning to heal from this traumatic experience.
Your donations make rapid, lifesaving responses like this possible. Because of you, Pathways was able to help Gabriel the moment he needed support most — turning a terrifying experience into a path toward safety and recovery.
Thank you for your belief in our mission.
