When Lamia, a young American woman studying abroad in Ghana, contacted us she was navigating an abusive relationship with her girlfriend. When Lamia tried to leave the relationship, her girlfriend threatened to disclose their relationship, placing Lamia in an especially vulnerable position given the potential legal consequences they could face.
Suddenly, Lamia was confronted with difficult decisions about her safety, privacy, and future while far from home and unsure where to turn for help. Pathways provided a safe, supportive space for Lamia to process her feelings, assess her circumstances, and explore her options without judgment or pressure. Together, we developed an extensive safety plan tailored to her situation, helping her consider potential risks and identify steps toward a safer future.
With this support, Lamia ultimately returned to the United States. Her experience highlights the additional barriers survivors may face when abuse intersects with the threat of being outed, particularly in countries where same-sex relationships may carry serious legal or social consequences. In these circumstances, seeking help can feel frightening and complicated, and survivors may face risks that others do not fully understand.
Pathways recognizes that every survivor deserves compassionate, confidential, and affirming support, regardless of sexual orientation or circumstances. By listening to Lamia, respecting her autonomy, and helping her plan for her safety, Pathways supported her in navigating a complex situation and taking steps toward a future where she can move forward with greater security, dignity, and freedom.
Without your support, Pathways would not be able to assist victims like Lamia and support them in their darkest hours of need. Thank you!
