Summary

All too often injured wildlife are reported by concerned members of the public to Baboon Matters, who then liaise with the nearest relevant welfare group or NGO. Frequently, lack of capture equipment means that the injured animal cannot be trapped for treatment and by the time the authorities arrive the animal has either moved on or has suffered extensively and is beyond help. We plan to provide emergency rescue equipment so that injured wildlife can be helped!

Challenge

Organisations dealing with animal welfare issues are extremely underfunded and as a result ill-equipped, yet effective equipment is essential for injured wildlife to get needed veterinary attention. Most veterinarians are willing to treat injured or ill baboons, and other wildlife life. The problem is getting the injured animal to the vet or containing the animal, safely and stress free, until the vet can assess the wounds and provide necessary treatment or humane euthanasia in critical cases.

Solution

Our project will supply Emergency Rescue Packs (ERP) and training to organisations working with baboons and wildlife so that they have know-how and equipment to contain an injured animal until they can be professionally assessed and appropriately treated. The provision of ERP and training will mean that wildlife can be swiftly and effectively treated and released back to the wild, eliminating extensive suffering or slow death. The development of a database will enable cl

Long-Term Impact

The development of training material and data bases will be available nationally through web and social media. Members of the public who encounter injured wildlife will be able to inform relevant organisations who have been trained and equipped to provide efficient and effective treatment as quickly as possible. The role out of Emergency Rescue Packs will start in the Western Cape where three initial organisations have been identified, and extend nationally when funds are secured.
