Meet orphaned white rhino calves Angie and Eve. Angie was found wandering around the body of her dead mother, who had been killed by poachers. Eve was found alone on a reserve, no mother in sight. A rhino bull had also started behaving aggressively towards her, so she needed to be removed from the area. After unsuccessful attempts to locate her mother, she was brought through to HESC for care. Both little girls are being rehabilitated and will be released back into the wild when fully grown.
Rhino poaching is an ongoing problem in South Africa. Poachers stop at nothing to get their hands on rhino horns, which fetch exorbitant amounts on the black market. As a result, many baby rhinos are left orphaned and traumatised. In addition, nature too can take its course and leave behind more traumatised baby rhinos who now need to be fed, rehabilitated and their health closely monitored.
By donating towards this project, donors will be playing an active part in taking care of these little rhinos through providing funds towards their feeding, medicine, & veterinary care when needed (which will be at various stages throughout the time they spend at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre). In addition, donors can contribute toward the upgrade of the baby rhino boma, the first stop for these little ones when arriving at HESC. They need 24-hour care & also need to be quarantined.
Donors will be contributing towards rhino conservation, because with each rhino that can be saved and eventually released, the fast-declining white rhino population has the potential to grow.
