Since our last report, Thaba has made significant progress in his growth journey at the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC).
His favourite pastimes have still included napping, snacking on lucerne, running behind the truck, and of course … his milk feeds.
However, there comes a time in every baby rhino’s life when he needs to move to the next level in his development, ensuring that he can grow into the big boy he deserves to be. Such a time has now arrived for Thaba, namely weaning.
Over the past month, his milk feeds were reduced to just one 6 litre feed a day, and he received his final milk feed at the end of September. Because the weaning process happened gradually, he eventually got to a stage where he wasn’t too concerned about the feeds – even having to be called to come and drink, as opposed to running towards his bucket like he did in the past.
Nevertheless, the curators at HESC were on hand to witness his last feed, complete with crocheted rhino hats for the occasion.
Now that the last slurps are done and dusted, we look forward to the next phase in his development.
