We are helping vulnerable young people, orphans and widowed women in Goma, DRC by building and equipping a 12-classroom training centre plus administrative block and latrines. Over 18 months, we will construct the facility (10 months) and deliver 6 months of vocational training in sewing, carpentry and literacy. The centre in Goma will grow each year to welcome more women, youth and orphans and support their socio-professional reintegration.
In Goma and the territories of Nyiragongo, Masisi and Rutshuru, the rates of unemployment among young people and widowed women have soared. Many live below the poverty line, traumatized by conflict, excluded by society and lacking basic skills for employment. Without targeted vocational training and safe infrastructure, they face a lifetime without hope. They need a centre where they are seen, supported and trained. The challenge is urgent, real and deeply human.
Over an 18-month period we will: recruit and train instructors; raise awareness in the community; build and equip a 12-classroom vocational training centre, an administrative block and durable latrines (10 months); then conduct 6 months of multidiscipline training in sewing, carpentry and literacy for young people, widowed women and orphans. After the project phase, the centre will continue receiving new learners each year and expand its reach as the need grows.
This project will not only open doors for dozens of women, youth and orphans in Goma, it will seed a multiplier effect. Trained women earn income, educate their children, and uplift their families. Young people escape the streets and build businesses or jobs. The centre becomes a local hub of hope, reducing youth idleness and boosting community stability. Over time the ripple effect strengthens the economy of North Kivu, breaks cycles of poverty and transforms lives.
