Challenge

Children who have experienced a traumatic event before age five can face continued difficulties. As a result of maltreatment, the sudden loss of a family member, or other traumatic experiences young children can develop lasting behavioral and mental health problems, including post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Solution

LAYC's Therapeutic Playroom will play a vital role in Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP), an approach developed to strengthen a child's sense of safety and attachment with their parents/caregivers.Through play, children can strengthen relationships with parents/ caregivers and in turn parents/caregivers learn to provide an environment of physical and emotional safety to their children. The construction of a playroom appropriate for young children is necessary for CPP to be available at LAYC.

Long-Term Impact

Continued Child-Parent Psychotherapy in an environment such as a Therapeutic Playroom can be a vehicle to improve a child's cognitive, behavioral, and social functioning as they continue through childhood. This project provides an environment conducive to play, and ultimately, conducive to healing.
