The "Help Build the Bakwa Health Center" project aims to provide accessible, quality healthcare to the underserved population of Bakwa village in Cameroon's Northwest region. Since our last update, the project has been facing various setbacks and challenges. This health center is crucial for improving maternal and child health, reducing preventable deaths, and strengthening community resilience.
The project’s progress has been slower than expected due to limited funding and security issues in the area. The limited financial resources have made it difficult to procure and transport essential materials. Security concerns in the Northwest region, especially near the project site, have further hampered the transportation of materials and construction efforts. However, we are engaging local leaders and government agencies to support ongoing efforts.
A powerful reminder of why this project matters comes from Linda, a young mother in Bakwa who recently shared how she had to walk more than 12 kilometers with her 2-year-old son to reach the nearest health facility. Thankfully, she arrived in time, but many others aren’t as fortunate. Stories like Linda’s highlight the urgent need for a local health center that can provide safe, timely care without the dangers of long, difficult journeys.
Through our community engagement in Bakwa, community members remain dedicated, volunteering their time and resources despite difficult conditions. With additional donor support, we can resume construction, finish flooring and window installations, equip the health center, and move closer to opening a facility that will serve thousands.
