Political unrest continues in Myanmar though Southern Shan State is considered one of the safest regions for now. The safety of our staff is the number one priority. If violence gets close to our partner villages, project officers work from home until travel is safe. That said, our programming forges ahead!
Due to the instability, inflation is seriously affecting our budgeting, with commodity costs rising dramatically—50 %. In Lin Phon village, community members raised an additional $2,550 for the project—this is a significant amount for a household that lives on less than $800/year. Shanta contributed $11,000 more to ensure the project was completed.
Two other villages have current teacher housing infrastructure projects slated, and ALL of our Zambia partner villages have identified teacher housing as a priority. Infrastructure projects are usually deployed in the third and fourth years of partnership. As you an imagine, these are our most expensive projects due to materials, labor and equipment needs.
Times are challenging, but Shanta and our partner villages are determined to create a path out of extreme poverty forever—together. Join us.
