Our New Ambulance Has Already Saved Lives!

Update from Jjanda Medical Centre (JMC)

Ambulance

We are very pleased to be able to report that the new Ambulance is being used regularly!

All our nurses and midwives have been trained by a doctor in Emergency Medicine so that they have the skills needed when accompanying patients in the ambulance, and they are very excited about this new role and challenge. We now have a full-time driver who is on call and ready to make an emergency journey. He is very proud of his job and so happy that he can play this especially important part in this vital new venture.

The road to the clinic and campus has never been tarmacked and parts of it are very difficult to navigate, especially in the rainy season. However, we can now confirm that improvement works are nearing completion. These are already having a positive impact on accessibility and are raising local awareness of the clinic now that it is easier to reach. We are already experiencing an increase in patient numbers, which is expected to continue to rise in the future.

Other clinics in the neighbourhood have been informed about the new ambulance and a collaboration has now been set up, which enables them to use and benefit from it in exchange for a small fee.

Thanks to the generosity of all our supporters, our great new ambulance venture is now saving even more lives in the wider local community!

Staffing

We now have a dentist working in the clinic between 8am and 4pm on weekends. This is attracting more patients, enhancing the clinic’s use, and improving its economic viability.

There is also a new medical records clerk from the Uganda Protestant Agency (UPMB). They are responsible for all the medical records from the HIV and TB programmes, and also those from our regular clinic patients. They are paid by UPMB, therefore not on the JMC payroll, but providing us with a vital service.

We currently have four volunteers gaining work experience, and they are helping on busy clinic days.

Two volunteers from the Netherlands have also recently re-visited the clinic.

Testimony from one of the Volunteers.

One of our professional staff at the clinic, Kevin B, has given us a testimony. He is keen to say:

“As a medical laboratory assistant who works at the weekends, it has always been a pleasure working with the medical staff at JMC. It has been so enjoyable given the opportunity to serve both students and the surrounding community at large.

I have been given the chance to experience, learn and interact with various staff members, the staff team has been absolutely wonderful to work with right from the start.

The skilled, dedicated, and compassionate staff of JMC who are always thinking ahead and routinely go above and beyond to ensure that the patients receive both the very best care and outstanding patient experience is what makes it a wonderful place to work in.

The collaboration and commitment of the entire team from doctors, nurses, dentists, laboratory assistants and the other support staff makes treating the patients an easy work for everyone involved.

I am grateful and honoured to be part of the JMC team”.

Here is another video testimony from a past student of CWM who is now a fully qualified Doctor!

Maintenance

The floors in the clinic reception, and in the wards area, are being renewed. This will hopefully be completed before the end of the year, and thankfully the clinic will not need to close during the works.

There have been some recent internal changes in the use of certain rooms so that we can utilise the space more efficiently.

Our plans to build an Ambulance Carport and outside Waiting Room are still in progress, with the aim for these to be completed in the first quarter of 2024.

Giving Tuesday and Christmas Campaign.

This year our theme is “Give Light!”

Please Give a little Extra Light on Giving Tuesday 28th November 2023.

As many of you know, this is a yearly international day for charitable giving that follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday.  This year GlobalGiving (GG) is offering a $1,200,000 Incentive Fund that will be distributed to all projects proportionally based on final fundraising totals. Therefore, the more funds we can raise during the 24-hour campaign the more ‘prize’ money we will earn!

Help us to give our clinic patients and our wonderful staff a little extra light this Christmas! We would be so grateful if you could help us do this and make this year’s GG Giving Tuesday a great success! You can donate to JMC via this link:

www.globalgiving.org/58976

You can donate in $, £ or even Euros! ‘Giving Tuesday’ lasts for 24 hours and starts at midnight ET in the USA, 5am GMT in the UK, and 6am CET in Europe.

Climate Friendly Christmas Presents!

Look no further! Sending a GG Gift Card and asking the receiver to support JMC is an environmentally sustainable and long-lasting gift… plus it’s easy!

Just click this link: https://www.globalgiving.org/gifts/ to buy and send your cards digitally. The recipient can then choose which project to support, so it’s particularly important that you kindly ask them to donate their card to JMC!  www.globalgiving.org/58976

Every donation is welcome! Kinderhulp Afrika, which operates JMC, runs solely on donations and we are grateful for all the support we receive.

Thank you!

Thank you for your support and continued interest during this last year.  If you can’t give now, we completely understand, and would be grateful if you can help us by sharing the link and telling your friends about the work we are doing and all that we are achieving in Uganda.

Please visit our website for more information and regular updates: https://www.kinderhulp-afrika.nl/en/

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the office via the website or myself personally, jill@kinderhulp-afrika.nl, I would love to hear from you.

I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of all the staff at JMC and Kinderhulp Afrika to wish you and your family a Very Happy Christmas and Best Wishes for a healthier, happier, brighter and peaceful 2024!
