We provide creativity workshops, health education and emotional support for 970 students from disadvantaged rural areas in North-East Romania, in order to help them continue their studies and make the best of their potential. These children face enormous challenges, but the size of those challenges is matched by their potential to address the barriers and to progress in their own development.
The NE region in Romania is among the poorest regions in the EU, and the rural environment is where this fact is most visible. Poverty goes hand in hand with lack of education, and together they form a vicious circle spiraling down. Many talented children living in the rural area see themselves forced to abandon their dreams of pursuing a career due to violent environment, lack of financial resources their families are facing. Many talented children never get to show what they are capable of.
We organize small groups of 10-12 children and, through engaging, practical, yet fun activities, we focus on developing their confidence, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. We also provide health education to classroom-sized groups of children, in order to help them stay healthy and safe. On another level, we organize creativity workshops with the teachers, so that they themselves can take over and develop innovative activities and curricula for their students, based on our approach.
Gifted children from disadvantaged rural areas will be empowered to make the transition from hesitant, early learners to confident, engaged students and citizens. These children will become role models for younger children, they will use their problem-solving and critical thinking skills to identify and address problems in their life and in their communities, will challenge attitudes and behaviors that perpetuate cycles of school dropping, violence, poverty and discrimination.
