We're back in school & loving it!

Hi Backup-to-our-Backup!

What a start of the year we’ve had! The last time we updated you, we were so excited about schools reopening that we just couldn’t sit still. By now, we are in full training mode and we are even almost done with the first school term of the year already! We would love to tell you more about the past couple months - here we go.

January was full of happy reunions and cheerful sights: children in classrooms actively learning with their teachers are simply one of our favorite things. While we are doing our best to be as careful as possible, showing up at our partner schools masked and sanitized, it is just such a relief for our team to be able to interact in person again. We even had a chance to observe lessons taught by student teachers from the PTCs we partner with, now that they were finally allowed to do their school practice. And on top of that: workshops with Geneva Global’s speed school facilitators and the second-year education students of Gulu University. Have we been busy? Yes. Are we enjoying every second of it? Also yes!

Psssst, can we tell you a secret? Something no one else knows yet? Thanks to your boundless generosity and one very special individual, this week is the first week our team is moving around in Backup Uganda’s very own car! Just in time, because the rainy season has just started in Gulu and surrounding areas. No more getting stuck in the office or at schools because of bad weather, and no more carrying impressively large items on the back of bodabodas - a true dream come true.

Big steps like this are possible thanks to your involvement, and guess what - this week you have a chance to make another awesome one happen! We are doing our best to raise $1,414 during GlobalGiving’s Little by Little campaign this week, to help us complete all planned activities with our current partner schools, so that we can start adding new schools to our program from 2023. Since GlobalGiving matches every donation up to $50 with 50% of the donated amount, that looks like an achievable goal, doesn’t it? Simply make a donation through our page on GlobalGiving (see below) - they will do the rest and we will do the work!

We couldn’t be happier to send you an update without terms like ‘lockdown’ and ‘schools closed’ in it (the ones here don’t count!). Here’s to keeping it that way in 2022!

Much love from Gulu,

The Backup Uganda Team
