Halfway through 2026: Let's reflect!

Hello Backup Family,

We have so much to celebrate with you this month!

Our Family Fun & Art Day was a huge success!

Together with 7 Hills International School, we hosted a wonderful day filled with creativity, laughter, and activities for all ages. Thanks to everyone who attended, donated, and cheered us on, the event raised more than UGX 2 million. Together with an additional donation from 7 Hills International School, the total amount raised reached over UGX 7 million!

The atmosphere was incredible, and we loved seeing everyone's artistic talents on display. And if you follow us on social media, you might already know the highlight of the day... Because we reached our fundraising goal, 7 Hills' Head of School kept his promise and dyed his hair bright green! It was the perfect way to celebrate a fantastic community effort.

Measuring Where We Begin

Over the past few months, much of our work has focused on listening and learning. As we began working with our new partner schools, we've been collecting information from teachers, parents and caregivers, learners, and local government representatives to understand where we're starting from.

We're now close to completing our baseline survey. This will give us an important reference point so that, at the end of the project, we can clearly measure the difference our work has made together.

A Special Podcast Milestone

We also recently recorded a very special 40th episode of the Every Child Can Learn podcast.

In this episode, members of our team are joined by our Board Chairperson to look back on the first 10 years of Backup Uganda. Together, we reflect on the incredible milestones we've reached, the lessons we've learned along the way, and our hopes and dreams for the next decade of making education more inclusive. Looking back reminds us just how far we've come—and how much of that journey has only been possible because of supporters like you.

New Schools, Creative Ideas & a Special Event

We’re organizing a Family Fun & Art Day on 9th May together with 7 Hills International School in Kampala—and you’re warmly invited! It will be a joyful day full of creativity, connection, and fun for all ages.

15 New Partner Schools Selected
After a highly competitive application process (we were truly inspired by the number of schools eager to join), we have selected 15 new partner primary schools in Kitgum and Nwoya.

Right now, we’re in the middle of holding start-up meetings with teachers and school administrators to kick things off. Even more exciting:

The first lesson observations have already taken place, and
Our first teacher workshops are just around the corner in the coming weeks.

It’s amazing to see this new chapter already coming to life in classrooms!

Creative Ideas from the Worldschool Project
Did you know that we are a long-time participant in the Worldschool Project in the Netherlands? Each year, final-year secondary school students work on research assignments connected to our work—and the results never fail to impress us.

Today, the annual Worldschool event took place, and once again, we were blown away by the students’ ideas. This year, we’re especially excited about the arts and crafts activities they developed to promote social inclusion among learners.

The timing couldn’t be better! We’re just about to launch our Lutino Weng activities at our new partner schools—and these focus exactly on building inclusion and belonging through creative and participatory approaches.

Starting 2026 with Big News and Big Plans

GivingTuesday was a big hit!

Dear friend,

Happy New Year!
How did 2026 start for you? We hope you felt well-rested, spent time with loved ones, and enjoyed lots of yummy food over the holidays.

We’re starting the year with some very exciting news to share with you!

In case you haven’t heard yet: Backup Uganda is expanding!
In partnership with Association Omoana, and with funding from the Geneva Federation for Cooperation and Development, we will be working with 30 primary schools across Kitgum, Omoro, and Nwoya districts over the next three years.

This is a huge step for us—and your support played a major role in making it possible. Because you continue to believe in our work, we’ve been able to show just how important inclusive education is for learners, teachers, and communities. Thank you for helping us get here

This expansion isn’t just about adding more schools. We’re also strengthening and broadening our approach by offering more holistic support, including:

A stronger focus on social inclusion among learners, and
Improved referral pathways for children with learning difficulties and disabilities across all three districts.

While we wait for the new school year to begin in early February, our team is busy laying the groundwork for these big steps. Right now, we’re:

Growing our team,
Signing agreements with district authorities,
Inviting schools to apply to join our training program, and
Developing the tools and systems needed to make everything run smoothly.

So… do we still need your support?
Yes, we do!

Every contribution continues to make a real difference. For example, your generous donations on GivingTuesday added up to over $500, which we’ll use to organize Inclusion Re-Ignited—an inspiration event on inclusive education for teachers from our partner schools up to 2025. This event will be all about re-energizing teachers, sharing good practice, and reminding them that inclusive classrooms truly matter.
