Education in Uganda: Resilience to the max!

Hi Backup family!

Just like that, September has already begun - Christmas is basically around the corner! We had hoped that the months between our last update and today would simply follow a linear progression to a full school reopening and a gradual return to something that resembles ‘normal’. But, COVID-19 wouldn’t be COVID-19 if it didn’t have a surprise for us, so we are once again falling back on our resilience and adaptability. Thank you for being with us every step of the way.

As we were preparing for the children in Primary 1, 2 and 3 to finally return to school on 7th June, instead, all learners at all levels were sent home on that day as all schools were closed again. Two weeks later, a strict lockdown was put in place for 6 weeks to reduce the number of COVID-19 infections as quickly as possible. For our team, that meant: back to working from home!

Were we disappointed by these new developments? Yes. Did we make full use of the 6 weeks of lockdown? Also yes! We decided to set a goal: film all the training sessions for our ODII blended training package for teachers. Thanks to a generous head teacher at one of our partner schools, we got permission to use the quiet school compound as a film set. We are proud to tell you that we managed to film all 9 sessions and the editing process has started. Cameraman Fred has a couple bloopers in store for you as well…

While the strict lockdown has ended and we are back in our favorite office space now, the Ministry of Education & Sports has not yet announced a reopening date for schools. We are doing our best to advocate for this together with other education partners, as we are seeing the devastating impact on children who are not able to learn from home.

To make sure we can continue doing our work the rest of the year - for example by supporting our partner schools in an inclusive return to school process - we are excited to announce the upcoming Little by Little campaign right here on GlobalGiving, starting on Monday 13th September. During the 5 days of the campaign, we will do our very best to raise $1,000 towards the continuation of our work & a long overdue equipment upgrade. You will get all the details from us on Monday, so keep an eye on your inbox!

Much love from Gulu, as always,

The Backup Uganda Team
