Sustain for Life has developed a comprehensive organic agriculture project bringing it to the grassroot level at most to family level in most communities of Bukedea - Uganda for the purpose of feeding malnourished children and helpless families in communities in terms of food sustainability. In addition, kitchen gardens promote entrepreneurship and rural development, helping to uplift families and ensure that their children can grow healthily and learn to their best abilities.
Long term drought and conflict have caused deep suffering for the women in our partner communities in rural Uganda. Rainfall has been insufficient for 3 years now, causing one of the worst droughts in 40 years. People rely upon the rain to grow food for their families and to grow some cash crops to sell for money. The women in our partner communities grow 2 staple crops, and cannot afford other seeds to grow nutrient dense fruits and vegetables which will improve their children's health.
This will provide sufficient nutritious, fresh food to feed both children & there families, while teaching the marginalized communities important agricultural skills - enabling them to become self-sufficient & self-reliant. Our aim is to provide a sustainable solution to combat hunger, food insecurity, malnutrition, poverty, & disease and to offer improved livelihoods for beneficiaries of the program by training beneficiaries & surrounding communities in nutrition, sanitation & income generation
This project will significantly improve the dietary diversity, nutrition, health and welfare of 1,000 rural and small-town families in Bukedea District. It will provide a partnership model of effective support for home and community gardens for replication and scaling-up throughout Uganda. Women managed gardens empower women to feed their families, earn income, reduce domestic tension and, eventually, command community respect.
