Dear Leadership Initiatives Donor,
The 2026–2027 International Internship Program marks an exciting new chapter in Leadership Initiatives' commitment to creating lasting, community-driven change in Nigeria. Across Gudum Hausawa, Gudum Sayawa, and Jitar, students from around the world are working alongside local entrepreneurs, public health professionals, and community leaders to identify challenges, explore solutions, and create opportunities that can improve lives for generations.
This year, our interns are partnering with 70 local business owners, our largest entrepreneurial cohort to date, while expanding our Public Health and Advocacy programs. Together, these three programs are helping communities identify their greatest needs and develop practical strategies for a stronger future.
Supporting Local Businesses and Economic Opportunity
Our Business & Development interns are working directly with entrepreneurs to understand the challenges they face and identify opportunities for growth. Many of these business owners earn less than $50 per month while working to support their families.
Through business research, customer analysis, and customized branding and marketing strategies, interns are helping entrepreneurs strengthen their businesses and expand their earning potential. Working closely with each owner, teams will develop recommendations that can guide future investments in business equipment, essential supplies, professional training, and other resources that support financial independence.
Improving Community Health, Education, and Opportunity
Our Public Health and Advocacy interns are working alongside residents of Gudum Hausawa, Gudum Sayawa, and Jitar to better understand challenges involving clean water, sanitation, healthcare, education, women's empowerment, economic opportunity, and the protection of vulnerable populations.
Through extensive research and community baseline surveys, interns are helping ensure that local voices guide the decisions that follow. This year, our teams are preparing to gather insights from 300 residents across the three communities, with 150 participants contributing to Public Health research and 150 to Advocacy research.
These conversations will help interns and community leaders identify the barriers families face, understand which resources are most urgently needed, and determine which improvements could make the greatest difference. Using these findings, teams will develop educational workshops, awareness campaigns, and recommendations that reflect the priorities of the people they are working to support.
Turning Community Priorities Into Lasting Change
At the heart of the International Internship Program is our belief that meaningful development begins by listening. Our interns are not simply creating projects for communities. They are working alongside local families, entrepreneurs, and leaders to help shape solutions that reflect their experiences, priorities, and hopes for the future.
Your generosity is helping turn this collaboration into meaningful, lasting change. Through their research, surveys, and partnerships with local residents, our interns are helping identify long-term development priorities that may include building schools, constructing solar-powered clean water wells, improving healthcare clinics, expanding educational opportunities, and providing small business grants that strengthen local economies.
These investments have the potential to do far more than address immediate challenges. A new school can open doors for generations of children. A reliable source of clean water can improve the health of entire communities. A thriving small business can provide greater financial security for a family and create new opportunities for others.
Your donation helps make these possibilities a reality by supporting community-driven development projects shaped by the people who will benefit from them. Together, our interns and Nigerian partners are helping build a foundation for stronger, healthier, and more economically secure communities.
Thank you for believing in our interns, supporting our local partners, and investing in the future of families across Gudum Hausawa, Gudum Sayawa, and Jitar. We are deeply grateful for your generosity and look forward to sharing the lasting impact we can create together.
With gratitude,
Jessica Bailly
