Challenge

The vast majority of young people who are Deaf are at high risk of unemployment or chronic underemployment. For the majority of the Deaf population in Mexico who have no other physical or intellectual challenges, and are fortunate enough to receive an education, the biggest barrier is simply communication.

Solution

In today's society, computation has become the bridge for providing a streamlined method of interacting. Email, text and apps designed to aid communication narrow the gap between the hearing employer and the Deaf employee. Learning to use the devices necessary to facilitate this interaction paves the way forward to attaining strong tech skills. In today's employment world, strong tech skills are essential as they have become the backbone for almost every field and industry.

Long-Term Impact

Building Deaf students' arsenal with tech knowledge and know-how will allow them the opportunity to be prepared for the evolving tech job market; jobs that fit Deaf kids to a tee. Incorporating the skill of "coding" into Deaf education is an essential tool that can take Deaf students to a new level of societal participation. Through the universal language of computing, they can become a vital asset in filling the employment opportunities that await them now and into the future.
