Protecting Border Communities as Ebola Spreads

By Zachery Onyango | Project Leader

Dear Donor,

Thanks to your generous support, Development Alert has continued strengthening Ebola prevention and preparedness activities among vulnerable communities in Uganda, particularly communities living along high-movement areas connected to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

The need for continued vigilance has become even more urgent. As of August 16, 2026, the DRC had reported 4,945 confirmed Ebola cases and 2,325 deaths, making this the country's deadliest Ebola outbreak on record. Uganda has reported 20 confirmed cases and two deaths. The last confirmed case in Uganda was reported on June 21, and the country discharged its last Ebola patient on July 16.

Against this challenging regional situation, Development Alert has worked with communities to promote awareness about Ebola symptoms, prevention, early reporting, safe hygiene practices, and the importance of seeking medical attention quickly when illness is suspected.

Our community engagement efforts are particularly important in border and high-mobility communities where people frequently travel for trade, employment, family visits, and other activities. Providing accurate information helps reduce fear, misinformation, stigma, and dangerous delays in seeking care.

Your generosity is helping place communities at the frontline of prevention. Every awareness session, handwashing demonstration, community dialogue, and referral message can contribute to protecting families and slowing transmission.

Thank you for standing with Development Alert during this critical public health emergency. Your continued support is helping communities remain informed, prepared, and resilient while Uganda works to protect the progress made against Ebola.
